Group Discussion #3 Overview

These are the questions and answers from today's discussion:

Q1: Why did Sarah Byrnes only confide in Dale?
     A1: He also has pretty bad parents and he isn't the kind of person who would tell.
Q2: Is CAT class's educational purpose worth the risk? (Mark Brittain's suicide)
     A2: Yes. These kids are getting to explore their thoughts and opinions. Mark Brittain made his own choice.
Q3: Is Sarah Byrnes stronger physically or emotionally?
     A3: Physically because she was depressed and sat in silence, whereas physically she took a beating from Dale.
Q4: Is the world a good place or a bad place? Has your opinion changed since the beginning of the book?
     A4: We all still think that the bad outweighs the good.
Q5: Is the known better than the unknown? (Generally)
     A5: Some things are better left a mystery, so the unknown is better.
Q6: Sarah Byrnes says, "When you can't take it anymore, your body stops feeling for you. That was just your body being your friend." Is she talking emotionally or physically?
     A6: She is meaning emotionally because she went to the hospital to be silent and just shut everything out.
 Q7: Do you think that most of the students in CAT class could do their report on shame?
     A7: Yes, because everyone but Eric tries not to interact with Sarah, which is why she doesn't have many friends.
Q8: What would be your way of "staying fat"?
     A8: We would stop studying, quit sports, not wear nice clothes
Q9: What do you think of Carver after what he did?
     A9: We like that he stood up for what he believed in.
Q10: Do you have any teachers that you would trust the info about Sarah Byrnes with?
     A10: Yes
Q11: How is Mark's life now like Sarah Byrnes's life? (after his suicide attempt)
     A11: They are both being abandoned by people that they should be close to.
Q12: Do you think that Virgil Byrnes would have ever actually kill Moby?
     A12: Definitely, if he felt like it.
Q13: Should everyone always be held accountable for everything they say?
     A13: Yes, unless they are under pressure or are feeling very strong emotions.
Q14: What do you think Virgil Byrnes's past was like?
     A14: Maybe he was abused as a child.
Q15: Do you think that Virgil Byrnes loves Sarah? Even a little?
     A15: Absolutely not!
