Eric Calhoune would not be popular. Basically everyone bullies him. (Later in the book they don't, but in the beginning a lot of people do.) He does swim and it's pretty competitive, but I still wouldn't say sporty because he's not doing any other sports. He might be a little bit nerdy. I mean, he doesn't seem like the dumb stuff, but he doesn't seem like a know-it-all. He would turn in his work on time, I think. He is good with words.
Eric is in high school. He is 18 years old. He interacts with Ellerby at school a lot. Steve Ellerby is a funny character and is on Eric's swim team. Ellerby and Eric liked to tease Mark because Mark is a jerk. They did get in trouble for contributing to the fact that Mark attempted suicide. Honestly, I don't think they were guilty. It was Mark's choice. From this, I can tell that Eric feels more confident around his friends than alone.
