Conflict

There are multiple conflicts in this book. One of them is man vs man. At the same time, there is also a man vs self. There is also a man vs society.

Sarah Byrnes is against her dad. Virgil Byrnes has been torturing her daughter for basically all her life. When Sarah got burned, her dad didn't do anything to repair it. Even though he could, he didn't because he said it would teach her to be tough. Well, the tough part worked.

Sarah Byrnes is now in the hospital. She doesn't talk to anyone. She does hear everything though. She is kind of going against herself then, I guess. As Lemry said, "Maybe this is her way of taking a vacation."

The last conflict is man vs society. Sarah Byrnes and Eric were both outcasts. Sarah had horrible scars from burns and Eric was fat. Sarah didn't tell the truth about how she got burned because she thought nobody would believe her. Swimming has slimmed Eric so he no longer only has one friend. Still, they were teased and bullied because of "terminal ugliness."

  1. I agree with the thing about her dad, but I didn't want to spoil anything.
